Animal Reportable Diseases

Veterinarians play an essential role in protecting public health by identifying and reporting diseases that can affect both animals and people.

Report an animal disease

Duty to report

Under Ontario Regulation 557/90, veterinarians and laboratory directors must immediately notify public health if they know or suspect that an animal is infected with a disease of public health significance.

Reportable Diseases

Reportable diseases include:

  • Avian chlamydiosis (psittacosis / ornithosis)
  • Avian influenza
  • Novel influenzas
  • Echinococcus multilocularis infection
  • Animal tuberculosis

When reporting, veterinarians must provide information requested by the Medical Officer of Health, including:

  • The location of the animal or animals
  • Contact information for the owner or person responsible for the animal
  • Additional information needed to assess public health risk

Veterinarians can report an animal disease online or by phone.
